The Eagle Flies.......

Sundown Eagle
10 X 8 canvas panel
Acrylic
I saw a bald eagle a couple of weeks ago flying parallel to the road as I was driving south.  I had seen them down at the river or the lake but never here.  Close to the house I mostly see hawks, but this guy was BIG and had the distinctive white head and tail.  I was painting a sunset and decided to put the eagle into the painting.  I was talking to a guy who fixes computers that was looking at a cardinal painting.  He asked if I had any eagles.  I was just finishing this one, and my laptop wasn't picking up wifi, soooooo  my computer now works and the computer guy's dad has a Christmas present.  Nothing like barter...win/win!

Winter Cardinal

Sold
Winter Color
7 X 5 canvas panel
Acrylic
I love the splash of color cardinals make against snowfall.  We usually have several join in when we throw scratch out for the chickens.  They have to be fast before the chickens chase them off, so they dart from tree branches to the ground and back.  Love the warm color against the cool background.

Just Ducky

Lonely Drake
Acrylic
10 X 8 canvas panel
Hopefully the weather will be right to see more of these guys during the second half of duck season.  Not just more photo ops, but Sioux would sure like to retrieve more of them.  It's definitely lots of fun to paint these little pictures.  If last fall is any indication, I can find homes for these more easily as well--win/win!

This painting was donated to the Miami, OK, chapter of Ducks Unlimited.

A Month Gone!

Gone for a good cause though... arts and crafts shows every weekend.  I really don't do many, especially compared to some of my neighboring exhibitors.  One couple told me they do at least 35 shows a year.  Wow!  That's a LOT of work!  The whole setting-up-and-tearing-down thing can really wear on a person.  Taking the RV does make the show itself much better, not having to drive anywhere and waking up on the show site.

War Eagle, AR, the mill pictured above, was my favorite show.  It was also the biggest and longest at four days.  I thought the four days would be killer, but I enjoyed it.  I set up on Wednesday and then got to "people watch" until Sunday afternoon.  I saw more people in those days that I see the whole rest of the year since I live in the middle of nowhere.
I took this photo from on top of the RV.  Would have taken panorama to get all the camping and exhibition tents, not to mention the exhibitors on the other side of the river.

The location is somewhat off the beaten path, which meant no city traffic noises overnight.   Even though it isn't the most convenient thing for fair visitors to get there, crowds were really large; fields were packed with parked cars.  More than one booth visitor said it had taken nearly an hour from the time they had left Arkansas 12 Hwy to getting parked, a distance of under 2 miles.  Maybe that's why each morning on Thursday through Saturday there were people milling around already at 7:30 A. M.  Guess they wanted to beat traffic and get parked!
My booth was kind of in the middle of the exhibitors, with all kinds of offerings in wood, leather, metal, clothing, antiques, etc.  It's quite a mix of stuff; definitely not a strictly "fine art" show.  Suited me just fine since I'm not really a "Serious Artist."  I really enjoyed the comments (ego boost!) and liked talking to people, some of whom told me about their own artwork.

I sold a total of 22 art pieces this fall, many of them small.  Neighboring exhibitors said the economy has really affected sales.  I was pleased.  I got ideas about what people liked best, and, since I enjoyed painting all of them, I have something of an idea of what to paint this winter.  Fine art definitely does not sell like crafts.  Makes sense.  It's not a piece of clothing or jewelry that will spend most of the time in a closet or jewelry box.  It's not a seasonal piece that will spend most of the year in storage.  It's an element of your surroundings that you'll see every day.  It has to speak to you.  It generally has to match an available space, color scheme, and style.  Many of the works I sold went to people who came back to the booth, some the next day.  The painting had called to them.  Many struck an emotional chord, evoking memories of places, people, and pets not actually in the painting.  It's gratifying to me that I created things that bring enjoyment to others.

Well, no more shows till spring.....back to painting!

Boats, Anyone?

I took a photo of Mike and Alyssa's boat from my son's boat.  Then I placed the boat into an 11 x 14 sunset painting of the lake that I painted out of my little brain.  They liked it.  Now if I could just get a picture of my son's boat.....  Or if someone sent me a picture of their boat that they would like painted.....

"20 for 20" number 9

Out of the Mist
10 x 8 Acrylic on canvas panel
I like the head-on angle of the head on this guy.  With the camera set to take more than one in a series, the second shot gets the more alert, direct pose.  Haven't see this guy yet this year, mostly doe and fawns, turkeys, and raccoons.  The shot was in the dark with flash, but I like the background and mist.

Available at $20.00 plus $5.00 shipping

All the Pretty Little Horses...

SOLD
Bay, Blaze, and Snip
12 x 9 Acrylic on canvas panel
Dapples and greys, pintos and bays......  I like all colors.  This horse wasn't bay, but it is now.  Maybe I'll try one in blue or purple... just get out the artistic license and go for it.  I like to catch the image with the horse's head down, although they kind of seem to wonder what I'm doing with a camera down there.  Odd way to offer a treat maybe....  I do sometimes wish the acrylics didn't dry so fast and allowed more time for blending.  Could add a medium, I suppose.

Looking to Land
10 x 8 acrylic on canvas panel
Time to be up checking ponds and fields for teal and geese... the season's open!  I like the colors in this painting; it was fun to do.  Fall arts and crafts shows are coming up too.  Time to get ready!  I bought some software to keep track of all the paintings, and I really like it.  Email me if you would like to keep track of artwork.  Trailcams are getting pictures of deer, turkeys, and raccoons; had the last 100 degree day; the swimming pool is down........Come on Autumn!

Days Past

Sold
Spring Stream
20 x 16 Acrylic on canvas panel
My last posting requesting rain didn't work, so I'm trying again....internet rain dance!  Remember the wet, wet, wet Spring we had?  We had one here at least.  The horses were knee deep in mud in the lot, and forget about cleaning up any muck.  Then the switch was flipped, and it got hot and dry.  Sounds strange when it was 95 degrees out today, but it has cooled off.  Now please, please, PLEASE rain!

This painting harkens back to the spring rains that caused running water in the fields.  I like the wandering stream, but it looked kind of empty without the bird.  The heron is watching for fish that have escaped in the pond overflow.   I'm working on a painting that features sunlight through trees and a waterfall.  Because I made strong diagonals in the same direction, there's no real focal point.  The spousal unit really likes the painting.  I explained the compositional issue, and he said, " So....what?  If I came across this scene out somewhere, I should get a bulldozer and reroute the waterfall?"
     "Yeah, that's it."
All I can say is that if I still have it after the first of the year, it's one painting that will probably be a "do over," and you may never see it.

Small Birds

SOLD
Cardinal Pair
Image 5 x 4 Framed 8 1/2 x 7 1/2
Acrylic on canvas panel
The great thing about canvas panels is that they can be cut into various sizes even more easily than hardboard.  I found these pretty, little frames, but 5 x 4????  Not a standard size!  Just cut an 8 x 10 panel in pieces and problem solved!  There wasn't glass in the frames, so paper would have required paying more for the glass than I did for the frames.  Yay Acrylic!  No glass required!

I have generally painted Cardinals against a snowy background.  I love seeing their brilliant color in the winter.  Thought I'd try something different....

SOLD
Robin Family
5 x 5 Acrylic on 1" thick stretched canvas
Robins are early arrivals around here.  I sometimes see really large flocks of them munching berries in Hackberry trees when they get here a bit ahead of much available food.  Later when those hungry babies arrive, they busily find plenty of available food for them.

Requesting rain....pastel

Come This Way, Rain!
8 x 10 Pastel on Wallis Paper
I do love the look of pastel, and it is easier for me to control edges.  If I just weren't so careless and messy....  It's the "smear" factor that bothers me.  I definitely prefer pastel for work "en plein air."  Now that it has cooled off, I hope to get out and try some location work.  Last time I tried, it was 8:30 A.M., I tried using acrylics down at the pond, and sweat was dripping off my arms and everywhere onto the painting stuff.  Yuck!!!!

We really need rain again.  I wish those who are flooded could have sent the rain to our more parched areas of the country.  What's up with that, rain gods???  I'll keep on painting wishful thoughts....

"20 for 20" number 7

SOLD
Blue Heron
10 x 8 Acrylic on Canvas Panel
One of the things I like about acrylics is the ability to paint a habitat and then decide what animal to place into the scene.  Sometimes I'd rather not have too much planning before painting.  Seems more organic to just let the painting grow...certainly not always a good idea, but sometimes....

We have had blue herons hang out down at our pond periodically.  My lovin' hubby doesn't like them because he says they eat the minnows that could feed big fish, also the reason for turtle eradication.  I kinda like 'em.  When we go down to the river below Pensacola Dam, herons and egrets are just everywhere along the bank.  As Larry drifts along fishing, I try to get good photos before they fly off.  Once again, I think Mother Nature has mismatched the sound with an animal.  A beautiful bird with a long, graceful neck should not make a sound reminiscent of a very lengthy, disgusting belch.  It's just wrong!

"20 for 20" number 6

Still
10 x 8 Acrylic on canvas panel
I liked trying the "fuzzy" background on this one.  I don't think the background flowers look too much like floating blobs, do they?  There've been lots of rabbits out in the mornings and evenings.  They think they are invisible if they don't move, but I see 'em.  Evidently the horses don't though.  When we get close enough so that the rabbits move, the horses are always startled.  Guess they are invisible if they're still.

Is it finished?

SOLD
Young Runner
9 x 12 Acrylic on stretched canvas
One of the hardest things is deciding if a painting is the best I can do...is it finished?  Sometimes I'm satisfied, sometimes not.  Sometimes I'm not satisfied with a piece, but I don't know what to do to it.  Just not sure about this lil fella.......   Let it rest for a while, I guess.

I do love horses!  I've only been able to have my own for about four years now, and I love just watching them.  They move with such a beautiful blending of power and grace, even little guys like this young Appy.  I remember drawing horses when I was a girl living in Montana, going so far as to transfer an image onto fabric and embroidering it.  Horses make me smile!

"20 for 20" number 5

SOLD
Bug Search
10 x 8 Acrylic on Canvas panel
The thing about painting animals....they won't hold still!  I got several good photos of this guy out with some of the girls.  Good thing too because he's no longer with us.  Of the dozen new chicks we started out with this year, it turns out that five of them are roosters.  Not a problem until they grow up and there are now six roosters crowing.  Larry's rooster hunting until there is only one of the noisy things left.  I'm hoping for a black and white one to be the last man standing.

What Pastels?

One of Larry's
8 x10 Pastel on Wallis Paper
I'm even newer to pastel than I am to the rest of my artistic efforts.  I seem to go in spurts-- acrylics for a while....a few pastels....back to acrylics.  I enjoy working in the medium, but I think I just dislike having to put the work behind glass.  I like the drawing/painting feel of pastels, and I really like having no brushes to clean.  Acrylics dry so fast that I'm more likely to smear a pastel piece than I am to smoosh the paint on an acrylic.
Larry has several mounted deer heads, but he hasn't gotten over the "trophy-taking" need.  He takes the heads and makes European mounts of them.  I'm not a big fan.  They are all hanging out in the garage.  This one was over a doorway and was somewhat atypical, interesting enough to paint.  Besides, I'd rather have this hanging around.

Still wishing for Fall....

Sold
Autumn Field
24 x 16 Acrylic on hardboard panel
The highs are still in the nineties, which is preferable to temps in the 100's, but I'm ready for Fall.  This scene is an overlook from the road a mile or two from here.  It doesn't look quite the same now because a man has decided he likes the view too and is building a little house there.   I suppose it's just as well that I live in a place with such a variety of temperature extremes...gives me something to complain about.  The days are coming when I'll be whining about getting out early in the cold, dark morning to break ice on drinking water for the animals.  Then I'll be painting sunny, summer scenes looking forward to warmer weather.  Painting on hardboard is certainly different from painting on canvas.  The surface is so smooth that the paint really slides around.  It is easier to get fine lines, but
dry brushing doesn't break up so much.

"20 for 20" number 4

SOLD
Autumn Falls
10 x 8 Acrylic on canvas panel
I am so ready for a change of season!  This little painting, created with no reference material, reflects a desire to see some water moving and the beautiful colors of Fall.  There may be little of either around here this year because it's been so dry.  We did buy corn for the feeders today at an all-time high price.  The farmers sitting around the Co-op said they were getting so little yield that some were just baling the corn.  I don't know that the acorn crop will be very good either, so we'll at least start out feeding the critters.  Might not feed all winter though....

Heading Out
8 x 10 on canvas panel
When it's so hot, the best time to fish is either at night or early in the morning.  I prefer to sleep at night and hate to get up early, so I'm not a big fan.  However, there are beautiful sunrises out on the water, the likes of which I don't see from home.  We are surrounded by so many trees that no viewing vistas open up for sunrise or sunset; I have to get out and travel to see them.  Maybe I'll feel more like getting out when the temperatures cool.  At least there are only one or two days with forecasts in triple digits this week.... I seem to remember when the 90's didn't seem cool....

Available at $20.00 plus $5.00 shipping

Come on, Fall

After Hours
16" x 12" Acrylic on Canvas Panel
I'm ready for Fall.  It has been so hot that I have had quite enough Summer.  Soon we'll be setting out the trail cameras and hopefully feeding some corn.  Trail cameras are great!  We get so many neat pictures; well, and some pictures of rear ends too.  It really shows what animals are around.  We have pictures of various birds, rabbits, and squirrels.  Sometimes there are flocks of wild turkeys, and we have seen a bobcat and a fox.  At night there are often raccoons snacking on corn.  Once there was an owl sitting on a leg of the feeder.  Whitetail deer come in almost on a schedule.  Early in the season does and this year's fawns will come in during early morning or at dusk.  Sometimes bucks will come in with other bucks.  Schedules for the bucks especially change once hunting season starts.  They'll come in separately and mostly after shooting hours, thus the title for this piece.

Available at $65.00 plus $15.00 shipping

Love Clouds!

Work in Progress
20 x 16 acrylic on canvas panel
Clear blue skies are pretty, I guess; but I do love the infinite variety of clouds.  When the dark cloudbanks break and reveal that silver lining and shafts of light, it's glorious!  Puffy, white clouds and breathtakingly beautiful colors of clouds at sunrise or sunset....they're simply amazing.

"20 for 20" number 2

The Bugler
8 x 10 on Canvas Panel

It seems that every picture I see of a bull elk has his mouth open.  All of the nature shows focus on the season of the rut and the really strange noise these guys make.  I'm told it's the only time of the year the bulls bugle.  All I know is that I would never match that high, squeally, weird noise with these majestic animals.  Oh, and that I wouldn't want to carry all of that weight on my head.

"20 for 20"

Cascade
8 x 10  Acrylic on Canvas Panel

In keeping with an attempt to make original art affordable, the plan is to post 20 original acrylics on 8 x 10 canvas panels and offer them at $20 each plus shipping of $5.  Water cascades down a rocky slope in this first of the series.  It rained here in beautiful northeast Oklahoma again today.  Still in drought, so it's welcome!

I've been rereading some "Artists Magazine" back issues trying to improve my work, and I have come across mentions of using projection and really large photos.  First, I can't afford a projector, and second, I can't afford large prints of photos.  My work involves no projecting or copying of enlargements.  It's all just doin' what I do.

Available at $20.00 plus $5 shipping

Please Rain

Please Rain
16 x 20
Acrylic on Canvas Panel

Within 48 hours of finishing this piece, we received over an inch and a half of rain!  Today was also the first morning to go horseback riding in at least a month.  It has been so incredibly hot here in beautiful northeast Oklahoma.  Several days passed with lovely clouds, but no rain.  I spent a few days painting and repainting to get the look I wanted, painting something reminiscent of the area with stormy skies.  Hmmmmmm.....how to paint "world peace" and "an improved economy"....

Available at $65.00 plus $10.00 shipping
